homeschooling...?

You know, I've struggled with the homeschooling idea for a long time.  I even tried it, and failed.  I was, however, in a part of my life that was more survival than it was thriving and I'm sure that had something to do with my failure.  So I've struggled with the choice, watching my sweet right-brained student trip down the rabbit hole of the left-brain school system.

However...

When I see that the left is so self assured that they have started to openly mock all that is American, and feel they have the power to begin to dismantle the freedoms in our nation, well then I have to start looking hard at my choices.

Huh...  Well maybe I CAN be a good teacher after all....

Twenty years ago we started homeschooling and never looked back. It was a commitment that I never regret. I have known homeschool success and have known failures. But for me, it was freedom like I have never known.

I'm doing it. I got really tired of the crap going into my kid's head. And there were too many "safety issues" at the school.

As for "your kid belongs to us" good luck with that. I will kill to protect her.

We have had good success with the Sonlight program. You might want to check it out in your curriculum research.

When the libs say that nobody needs to carry guns to protect my child, and then turn around and say that raising her is a "group effort", that right there says it all. I'm a firm believer that if parents took control of their kids again, raising them with discipline (and the "group" kept their effin' noses out of it...spanking a child is not beating them! Learn the difference.), we would have less need for gov't assistance programs, welfare housing, bars on the windows, or CHL holders. Until then, I will carry concealed, discipline my daughter when necessary, and the "group" can go to hell.

You can do it. There are great programs out there.

Wow, thanks all for the vote of confidence! It is easy to get caught up in the idea that only "teachers" can teach our kids... I don't want to be one of those people that buys that.

BB, I'm still hesitant because of our previous attempts. Any suggestions to make this time more successful?

TCA, I feel your frustration. I can't believe how many ludicrous rules there are in the name of "safety," and how many of them are truly counter productive!

Money, we are very secular here, any idea if I can cherry pick the Sonlight curriculum and just buy elements? Any of the elements you recommend?

RA, Yeah, my biggest issue is the lack of self reliance that has become rampant in our nation. Our school is half a mile from our house and people are shocked that I allow them to ride their bikes to school alone. Sigh. And heaven help me if one of them is sick and one kid rides to school COMPLETELY ALONE??? I will never fail to be shocked by the terror others feel at the idea of my kids being independent

Thanks Jennifer:) I appreciate everyone faith in me!

DO IT. You could not possibly do worse (and you'll likely do a damn sight better) than the Proglodyte propagandists passing themselves off as 'educators.'

I've long said that keeping a child in publik skool in this day and age is tantamount to child abuse. Hopefully, it's not too late.

It is getting bad, but there are some good schools and teachers out there.

However, this woman makes me beyond angry!!!!

Wraith, The Girl's teacher had an Obama sticker proudly displayed on her personal vehicle. Last November. She couldn't see why it was a problem, and she *assured* me that the she was non-bias in class...

Girl, I know there are many dedicated and wonderful teachers in the system, but the system is broken. My kid is a right-brained kid that doesn't give a fig's behind about most anything she is forced to memorize. Because she is very intelligent, yet refuses to give a crap about grades, she is almost impossible to motivate at school. It's getting to the point that this intense and insane demand for testing perfection is leaving her behind. No matter how good her teachers, they still teach common core and teach to the tests. She is being left behind, ironically. So you combine that with a dramatically left leaning environment and I'm concerned that her schools are, indeed, the wrong place for her.

I beg you to do it and fast. Also, look for Unschooling references. In short, do not try to emulate school. Rather, live your lives and include them in all aspects. Cooking? That is measurements and math. Science, too, if your failures are monumental.

Friends do it this way with only one or two days a wk at a HS group for more generic classes. Too, if you would like to talk to a good friend who does this and well, let me know. There is a gal who put together an amazing binder system to ensure you cross all your Ts and dot all your Is for the local officials for "graduation". Maintaining their own bank acct counts - small things like that which you would not even think about.

ANYHOO!! PLEASE do it and do not get caught up in lesson plans and curricula. Just LIVE and LEARN together.

Yes you can cherry pick areas of study in the Sonlight program. It is fairly easy to skip the religious portions if you want. However, some of the Christian Heroes biography offerings are worth a read regardless of one's religious leanings or lack thereof.

I'd be happy to help you out if I can.
