The war is not over. No, far from it.
We also remember those service men and women who have given so much that we may prevail over those who would see us servile or dead. Selfless service deserves selfless service.
And as always for Ken. May you soar with the eagles forever. We will always miss you.

What Lu And I Will Be Doing On 9/11
Whilst perusing SayUncle today I came across his post on how best to remember the tenth anniversary of 9/11. He linked to this page, Bacon and Boomsticks. The idea is to remind the adherents of radical Islam that we remember and will not submit. I like it. To that end I'm grabbing Lu, loading up numerous firearms and buckets of ammunition and heading out to the Secret Range for the day. We'll bring along the dogs (because we all know how much they love our 4 legged companions) and pack along some nice pork products. I'm thinking BLT's. Maybe some nice chops or hot dogs on the grill afterward.
ASM826 at Random Acts of Patriotism reminds us to tell those who want to manage this day that we're still Americans and we'll do things the way that seems best to each of us individually.
To the obama administration and the apologists I say Piss Off. I am supremely uninterested in your opinions on what this day means or how I should feel about it. I'm simply in no mood for any more of your disingenuous bullshit.
I'll post on the day and there will be many pictures of 2 still free Americans exercising some of their natural Rights.

Bin Laden Dead
Woo Hoo! Let me just say it. I'm glad he's dead. He deserved to die and I just hope it was by our hands. We've been waiting for this day for a very, very long time.
Information is sketchy at this hour (2120 MST) but he was apparently killed about a week ago outside Islamabad, Pakistan either by missile/bomb or gunshot. Waiting for the Obama press conference.
At this point I'm just hoping it was an American who pulled the trigger, either in a cockpit or on a rifle. ID was through familial DNA match which argues that we do indeed have his body.
Lots of pundits speculating and Geraldo bloviating. I'm guessing security will get ratcheted up for possible (probable?) retaliation.
This is important for a couple of reasons. Bin Laden needed to be dead. Our war dead and the victims of 9/11 cry out for justice. It's also a good message to send to the rest of the world. Yeah, it took us almost 10 years but we persisted for almost 10 years. No matter how long it takes us, if you want to perpetrate such crimes against Americans we'll not rest until we find you and kill you. Bin Laden was living on borrowed time since September 11th 2001. It's also better he's dead than bringing him in for a trial. Every two bit terrorist with delusions of grandeur would have tried to try and either free or ransom him. Yeah, yeah I know. Now he's a martyr. He'd have been that one way or another. Whether by violence or lethal injection, dead is dead.
Paki's now confirming. Still waiting on The One. Come on, it's been at least half an hour since the story broke.
2135 MST. Obama confirms it was an American Operation. He's talking about 9/11. He's taking credit. No surprise there. He's confirming it was an American team who killed Bin Laden in a firefight. No American casualties, thank The Lord. Obama's speech was actually pretty good. The best I've heard him give. He ended with the last few lines from the Pledge of allegiance. Wow.
There will be more information forthcoming in the coming days I'm sure. For now all I can say is this.
To all our men and women who have and are serving in the cesspools of Iraq and Afghanistan. To the team who finally ran this mad dog down and ended his miserable and evil life. To the America who has supported and loved our valiant warriors.
Well Done!
I am so very proud to be an American tonight.

update: Looks like it's a party in New York tonight. Go right ahead folks, you earned it.
update: Looks like it was special ops personnel, perhaps Navy Seals. I know a few guys who will never, ever have to buy a drink in America again.
update: Geraldo is interviewing people on the streets, including veterans, active duty and military families. The joy is palpable. Chants of USA are everywhere.

9/11
I am here in my home in Southern Utah. When I woke this morning I saw an American flag on the street before my house that I had not put up. I asked Lu about it. Apparently we pay a small stipend to the Boy Scouts and they come by on patriotic days and put up a flag. I looked up and down my street. I took a drive around the town. Everywhere I looked I saw American flags. Erected by Boy Scouts on a bright, Saturday morning.
I love my small, Southern Utah town. I love the Boy Scouts. I love my Country. I fear not for my nation because we still breed Sheepdogs and those who honor them. On this September day, when we remember horror and death and sudden, violent, unprovoked war we also remember honor and bravery and Patriotism and self sacrifice. We remember our honored dead and those who bring death to our enemies.
We cannot be conquered, we cannot be beaten we cannot be made to offer obeisance. We can be killed but woe to those who do because regardless of politics, party or those who would offer their necks to the yoke, we are still a nation that produces Sheepdogs in great numbers and Sheepdogs know what a wolf looks and tastes like and cannot be deterred.
To the enemies of my beloved America, foreign and domestic, read these words and fear. They were written by a man both remarkable and ordinary. An American Sheepdog. We will never turn away from the fight. We will never sleep until the last wolf breathes his last gasping breath.
This I swear.

The Sheepdogs
Most humans truly are like sheep
Wanting nothing more than peace to keep
To graze, grow fat and raise their young,
Sweet taste of clover on the tongue.
Their lives serene upon Life’s farm,
They sense no threat nor fear no harm.
On verdant meadows, they forage free
With naught to fear, with naught to flee.
They pay their sheepdogs little heed
For there is no threat; there is no need.
To the flock, sheepdog’s are mysteries,
Roaming watchful round the peripheries.
These fang-toothed creatures bark, they roar
With the fetid reek of the carnivore,
Too like the wolf of legends told,
To be amongst our docile fold.
Who needs sheepdogs?
What good are they?
They have no use, not in this day.
Lock them away, out of our sight
We have no need of their fierce might.
But sudden in their midst a beast
Has come to kill, has come to feast
The wolves attack; they give no warning
Upon that calm September morning
They slash and kill with frenzied glee
Their passive helpless enemy
Who had no clue the wolves were there
Far roaming from their Eastern lair.
Then from the carnage, from the rout,
Comes the cry, “Turn the sheepdogs out!”
Thus is our nature but too our plight
To keep our dogs on leashes tight
And live a life of illusive bliss
Hearing not the beast, his growl, his hiss.
Until he has us by the throat,
We pay no heed; we take no note.
Not until he strikes us at our core
Will we unleash the Dogs of War
Only having felt the wolf pack’s wrath
Do we loose the sheepdogs on its path.
And the wolves will learn what we’ve shown before;
We love our sheep, we Dogs of War.

9-11
I'm sorry friends, my cold is still running rampant and my brain is foggy (glad I caught that, as I don't have a Brian around here, and I have no idea if any of them are foggy), so though I'd love to write up a moving and meaningful post for today, I must bow out. My NyQuil will be kicking in soon and this day is too important for less then my best. In leu of a well written post I am going to link last years post; it is the tale of my memories of 2001, with memories from Doohickie and the Six in the comments. Please feel free to add to the discussion this year if you so choose.
May we all remember the sacrifices made, that day and all the days since.
